GREENSPOON MARDER EXPANDS CANNABIS LAW PRACTICE IN CALIFORNIA WITH THE ADDITION OF PARTNER HEATHER L. BURKE
SACRAMENTO, CA – June 27, 2017 – Greenspoon Marder today announces the expansion of its Cannabis Law practice in California with the addition of leading cannabis partner Heather L. Burke . Ms. Burke joins the firm’s national Cannabis practice in servicing individuals and businesses in the cannabis industry on the West Coast.
Based in the Sacramento area, Ms. Burke has worked on numerous precedent setting cases, including a five-day evidentiary hearing regarding cannabis’ Schedule I status in U.S. v. Pickard in the Eastern District of California. Ms. Burke also co-drafted a proposed initiative for California cannabis legalization in 2016 entitled The California Craft Cannabis Initiative .
“California is an increasingly important market for our clients in the cannabis sector, particularly in light of the historic passing of Proposition 64 legalizing recreational marijuana in 2016,” comments Gerald Greenspoon, Co-Managing Director of Greenspoon Marder. “We are excited to continue to grow our team of highly-experienced and passionate cannabis attorneys who have been instrumental in the development of cannabis legislation in California.”
Due to her desire to defend cannabis patients and cultivators from a young age, Ms. Burke interned with partner Lance Rogers in law school, assisting him in the seminal California cannabis case, People v. Jovan Jackson . The case went on to set the now-settled precedent that large scale dispensaries may operate lawfully in California.
Ms. Burke began her career by working closely with several renowned California medical marijuana attorneys, who mentored her in the aggressive representation of medical cannabis patients and cultivators throughout California and in federal court. Ms. Burke eventually went on to open her own vibrant practice in Nevada City, CA.
Greenspoon Marder is one of the first firms of its size to service the $6.7 billion recreational and medicinal cannabis market in the United States. The firm launched its national Cannabis practice in 2016 with the opening of new offices in San Diego, CA, Denver, CO, Las Vegas, NV and Portland, OR.
